Biogas from Anaerobic Digestion

The Phoenix Group is producing energy for three end user groups:

  • Internal consumption
  • customers
  • larger-scale producers of green energy

Electricity

pure plant oil

Resources for large-scale end users are being developed in collaboration with a selection of generator manufacturers and the Phoenix Group are in the process of developing a diesel generator capable of running on Pure Plant Oil (PPO).

This form of green energy generation is likely to be eligible for increased ROCs and LECs benefits from April 2009, which will improve the economic feasibility of developing on-site power generation systems as an attractive option for many businesses facing increasing energy costs.

As shown in the Phoenix Group’s unique cyclical model of sustainability, we are working to make full internal use of all the energy available from power generation – this means making full use of the heat, as well as the electricity generated.

We are actively pursuing energy recovery technologies (ERT) such as absorption chilling equipment manufacturers (using waste heat to power refrigeration systems) to develop a ‘bolt-on’ system for standard diesel generators.

Pellets

The Phoenix Pellets are a commercial-scale version of the Green Dragon logs www.greendragonfuel.co.uk which are made using the rapemeal co-product of the rapeseed oil crushing process. Green Dragon logs burn three times longer than wood and give out twice the heat. As pellets, this rapemeal energy source will suitable for use in a range of commercial buildings from schools through to factories.

Anaerobic Digestion

rapeseed oil

An exiting future project for Phoenix Fuels is the installation of an anaerobic digestion unit. Anaerobic digestion units utilise microbes in the absence of oxygen to degrade almost any organic matter into methane. This methane can then be used as a fuel in a modified diesel engine to generate heat and power.
